The full title of this book is a fair description of its contents: Ancient Scotish Melodies, from a manuscript of the Reign of King James VI. with an Introductory Enquiry illustrative of the History of the Music of Scotland. It was published in 1838.

The manuscript referenced in the title is the Skene Lute book, a collection of melodies written in lute tablature. It was written in the early part of the 17th century, over a period of twenty to thirty years, according to the introduction by William Dauney, the author of this book.

The melodies are transcribed into standard, modern notation and printed beginning on page 217.
