On the Manners and Customs of
The Ancient Irish, Vol. I

by Eugene O’Curry, M.R.I.A.

Professor Eugene O'Curry, (1794-1862), was one of the major figures in Irish manuscript studies and his work is still one of the basic resources for the subject. He was responsible for cataloguing and transcribing many of the surviving manuscripts in both the Royal Irish Academy and the British Museum. Appointed to the Chair of Archaeology and Irish History at the new university set up in Dublin in 1854 he delivered a number of lectures on the subject of ‘The manners and customs of the ancient Irish’ subsequently published posthumously in 1873 by W.K. Sullivan along with additional edited notes and appendixes. This work is still one of the major sources for references to musicians in early Irish manuscripts.
